BrightSpot Communities is an organization based in Affordable housing and sustainable communities. I met with the client to represent their company focused in Community Outreach and Urban Development. We had met and discussed that they wanted BrightSpot to have a recognizable logo across their entire catalog of community works, along with a logo type for grants, paperwork, etc.. The idea of light through the trees was integral with the color story and I had first wanted to create a tree with its roots in the ground as an urban symbol. I was setting up some circular grids for spacing and staring back at me was a beautiful art nouveau stained glass window staring back at me. Accidently I had also created the green butterfly motif in the center and unbeknownst to me it was an important symbol in my client’s idea of the company. I wanted BrightSpot to be recognizable from a distance. The light pouring in through the window, a bright spot on the floor by the sun coming through the stained glass. The colors of the sky and trees and light. I wanted the logo to also be applicable to all branches of the community and other ventures my client has in their companies family so I created hundreds of color ways to select the best for each situation. With the knowledge of the butterfly motif I used it in a more casual logo type usage as the second “O” in brightspot as more of a type focused logotype rather than the other way around.
Having a logo to use cross platform, cross community was very important to BrightSpot and I wanted to make something that was comfortable and could be used in a multitude of situations. I love to draw from reference and the art nouveau style is very underrated. Stained glass has always been a favorite of mine, and my client felt connected to as well. Not to draw reference to a church directly but stained glass always has an awe inspiring look that Orthodox and Catholic Churches realized the value in. Light coming through, not blinding but full of colors and shape. BrightSpot could be a safe haven, similar to what a church tries to be, and that iconography could subliminally make someone feel secure and comfortable coming in.
